We're continuing our Behind the Lens of the Bible series! Today we will be talking about investing in equipment.
Choosing the right equipment is essential. Whether you prefer Canon, Nikon, or Sony, it's a personal choice. Beyond just buying the camera body, lenses really play a huge role in photography. For starters, I recommend upgrading from the basic kit lens to the versatile "Nifty Fifty," a 50mm lens that's both affordable and adaptable.
If you wanted to explore other lens options, the simplest and easiest way for me to explain it is this: the smaller the number, the more you'll get in the frame. For example: if you were doing an in-home maternity session, I'd recommend looking into a 35mm lens because it allows you to capture more in your frame (example: baby's nursery), while an 85mm lens almost feels like binoculars where everything will appear much closer and more will be cropped out of your photo. You'd have to stand really far back to try to get the same area in your shot.
Now if you start doing a simple search into how much camera bodies and lenses cost, you may feel your stomach become a little queasy. I'm not going to lie: it's a huge investment! When I was first starting out, I was shooting with a cropped-frame Canon 70D with a 50mm lens. Then my husband surprised me with a full-frame Sony mirrorless camera and a 40mm Zeiss lens. Very costly, but it has completely changed the way I photograph and I'm so thankful he made that investment into my business.
Investing in photography requires sacrifice, but it pales in comparison to the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus, as stated in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
This verse reminds me of the profound love and sacrifice demonstrated by Jesus. Just as we invest in our passion for photography, God invested in humanity, offering His Son to bring us eternal life. It was definitely the biggest investment anyone could ever make, but so worth it for the chance that we could live forever with Him!
What equipment will you be investing in for your photography?
